What is a Chemical Peel?

During a chemical peel, our experienced professionals apply a caustic acid or substance to burn, usually sloughing off or removing the outer layers of the skin (epidermis) and allowing new skin growth. The body’s natural daily process is to regenerate skin cells and shed older, dead cells. A chemical peel just artificially speeds this up and, in the process, removes blemished, sun-damaged, freckled skin, replacing it with younger, healthier skin. This treatment is also popular to treat some cancerous and precancerous growths.

Chemical peels can be performed on all parts of the body: face, neck, chest, back, arms, and legs. After healing, your skin will become tighter and thicker due to increased collagen production. The skin may appear fuller and smoother upon healing, with smaller pores and fewer wrinkles and fine lines. Your skin will look rejuvenated and more youthful following a chemical peel. At Bella Sol Med Spa, we use two different chemical peels in Chino based on your skin type: VI Peel by Vitality Institute and Perfect 10 Peel by Replenix MD.

What’s the First Step?

The first step to getting a chemical peel at Bella Sol Med Spa is to schedule an in-person visit with our skillfully trained providers. During the consultation, you will discuss your medical history, aesthetic goals, concerns, and expectations for the procedure.

Your provider will evaluate your skin condition and the target areas of concern. She will share details of the procedure and recovery and its associated pros and cons. If she deems you suitable for a chemical peel, she will draft a customized treatment plan for you. You can then take the plan to our patient coordinator and schedule your treatment to occur right then or later at a more convenient time. You can also ask them to guide you toward pricing and any pre-treatment instructions.

What to Expect on the Day of a Chemical Peel

On the day of your chemical peel in Chino, our team will greet you and get you settled in the treatment room. They will review your customized treatment plan once more to ensure everyone is on the same page about the target area and goals.

Then, the target area will first be cleansed, and if you require it, you’ll be given a topical anesthetic to ease the process should you experience any discomfort. Chemical peels can be applied at varying depths, so your discomfort will be proportional to the depth of the peel. The chemical solution itself also carries anesthetic properties, so once it is applied, you will sense a numbing sensation after an initial tingling sensation. Once the peel has reached its appropriate depth, the solution will be wiped off and replaced by a neutralizing solution to stop the chemical reaction. A handheld fan is also provided should you need extra cooling in the area.

The treatment could take anywhere from 15 minutes to a few hours, depending on the size of the treatment area and the depth of your chemical peel.

Chemical Peel Recovery

Chemical peels have a low recovery time. Some patients do complain of mild swelling and reddening of the target area. Please follow the post-treatment care instructions to get the best results, and if anything feels out of the ordinary, please contact us immediately.

In a day or so, the skin will scab and crust to protect the new underlying skin. It is imperative that you let it fall off on its own time. You can wash it with warm water and soap, but using all the ointments prescribed to you is important.

After a few days, once this scab falls off, your face will again appear red, like a sunburn. Over the next few weeks, your skin will darken to its natural color as the new skin fully generates. Most lighter freckles and birthmarks will disappear; however, heavier freckles will still be noticeable. Once your pigmentation returns, we strongly encourage good skincare, especially sun protection. You are now allowed to use light makeup but with caution.
